Football Clubs

Cardiff City Football Club

Cardiff City Football Club is a professional football club based in Cardiff, South Wales, UK. The club was founded as Riverside AFC in 1899, becoming Cardiff City in 1908. They are affectionately known to their loyal fan base as the Bluebirds.

Cardiff City FC competes in the English Premier League, the top tier of the English football pyramid. The club famously lifted the FA Cup in 1927 by beating Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley and remain the only non-English side to ever win the illustrious competition. They reached the FA Cup Final for a third time (having done so in 1925, prior to their 1927 triumph), but the Championship side (as they were in 2008) would narrowly lose 1-0 to top-flight Portsmouth in the Wembley showpiece.

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Vincent Tan acquired a substantial stake in the club in 2009, addressing its financial concerns and taking bold decisions to make it more successful and sustainable. Cardiff City FC would reach the Championship Play-Off Semi-Finals in 2011 and 2012 as well as the 2012 League Cup Final at Wembley (again as a second-tier side), only to lose on penalties to Liverpool with the game having finished 2-2 after a period of extra time.

The Bluebirds would secure promotion to the Premier League in April 2013, returning to the elite level of English football for the first time in 51 years. Despite relegation the subsequent season, Cardiff City returned to the Premier League in 2018 and are one of 20 member clubs competing in the EPL for the 2018-19 season.

Notable achievements during Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan’s time at Cardiff City FC include:

2010 – Championship Play-Off Finalists
2011 – Championship Play-Off Semi-Finalists
