U Mobile Sdn Bhd, the country's newest 3G service provider, expects its newly-launched postpaid service to receive a good response from consumers with its competitive rate.

Its newly appointed chief executive officer Yun Hae Jong said under the U38 plan, subscribers needed to pay a commitment fee of only RM38 per month.

They will enjoy a two-month free run with U Mobile's broadband service which is available on its HSDPA (high-speed downlink packet access)-driven 3G network in the Klang Valley, he said.

"The plan is targeted squarely at the new 3G user who wants an uncomplicated, affordable, performance-driven postpaid with all the essentials thrown in. Through our competitive rate and service, I'm sure we can attract subscribers from other operators," Yun said after the service was launched by Deputy Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Joseph Salang here Tuesday.

He said the plan will be available to the public on April 18 onwards at the U Mobile flagship store at Berjaya Times Square here and from selected mobile phone dealers and distributors throughout the Klang Valley.

Yun said the company planned to introduce its prepaid service in June this year.

U Mobile's deputy chairman Datuk Rosman Ridzwan meanwhile announced that the acquisition of a joint 33 percent stake in the company by Japan-based mobile service operator NTT DoCoMo and Korea's largest 3G mobile service provider KT Freetel (KTF) for US$200 million had been completed.

"The finalisation of our strategic partnership has brought an increased level of enthusiasm to our already eager workforce. Now in addition to the pool of dedicated local talents driving the company forward, we have joining the fun team equally energetic and capable talents from DoCoMo and KTF," Rosman said.

"With this potent collective of knowledge and expertise at U Mobile, we are now in the best position ever to introduce our products and services to eager consumers in the country. Thus, 2008 will be a very important year for us," he said.
